How does Iowa EPSCoR impact teachers? How do I connect my classroom with Iowa EPSCoR programs?
Iowa EPSCoR addresses teachers’ professional development needs in terms of content knowledge, delivery of inquiry-based curricula, and in understanding the nature of scientific research. To achieve these goals, Iowa NSF EPSCoR is expanding and extending two existing programs: Project-Lead-the-Way (PLTW) and ISU’s Summer Institute for middle school teachers on biorenewables.
Specifically, Iowa NSF EPSCoR is expanding the existing PLTW summer instructor training for pre-college teachers to accommodate another 30 teachers per year. It is also broadening the 2-week PLTW curriculum by adding a 3-day program in renewable energy and energy efficiency combining lectures from the research platform faculty with hands-on laboratory training at the Iowa NSF EPSCoR platform sites, and (c) support instructors to visit the research platforms with their students twice during each school year.
ISU’s Summer Institute for middle school teachers on biorenewables will also be expanded to develop similar programs on wind energy at UI and energy efficiency at UNI. To provide enhanced professional development through content-based training for middle school science teachers, Iowa NSF EPSCoR will offer graduates from the PLTW middle school program an opportunity to further their training.
